A ready-to-fruit (RTF) kit is a colonized block in a bag. You open a small face cut, keep humidity on that face, wait for pins, harvest clusters, and optionally run a second flush. Keep the bag on unless the label says otherwise.

Who this is for
Kitchen growers with an edible gourmet kit (oyster, lion’s mane, shiitake, chestnut, pioppino, and a few others). If your kit block arrived fully white, sealed in a plastic grow bag, with a printed insert asking you to mist — this page is for you.
This is not a guide for:
- Bulk substrate monotubs — those have their own workflow and more contamination surface area. We don’t cover them.
- Grain spawn or liquid culture inoculation — that’s a second grow, after you’ve harvested at least one clean kit.
- Outdoor log projects — plug spawn into hardwood logs is a different timing curve and isn’t a kitchen path.
- Anything with a brand or species name you don’t recognize — if the listing doesn’t name a species and a yield range, consider it a low-quality product and buy from a vendor who names what you’re growing.

What you need (roles)
Three things, all cheap, and only one is mandatory.
- Clean knife or scissors — for the cut. Wipe the blade with isopropyl alcohol first. This is the only piece of kit “sterility” the home grower actually needs at the kit stage.
- Fine-mist spray bottle — for dew. A continuous-mist spray bottle gives an even cloud without dumping water; trigger sprayers put out drops that pool. Continuous-mist bottles cost about the same and you can keep using them for plants.
- Optional humidity tent — a clear bag with vent holes, a glass cloche, or even an upside-down translucent storage tub with a few air holes. Only reach for a tent if your room drops below 40% relative humidity in winter, or if you picked lion’s mane in a dry climate.
A counter with indirect light is the “fruiting chamber.” You don’t need a flow hood, a Martha tent, or a humidifier on a smart plug. Most RTF kits fruit fine in a kitchen. The only upgrade that earns its keep before second grow is a humidity reading from a cheap hygrometer — and even that’s optional.
Anatomy of a grow kit
A typical ready-to-fruit kit has four parts. Knowing what they are makes troubleshooting ten times easier.
Substrate. This is the food for the mycelium. Most home kits use supplemented hardwood sawdust (oak or a blend), straw, or a soy-hull supplement mixed with sawdust. Oyster kits lean toward straw and masters mix; lion’s mane and shiitake want denser hardwood. The substrate should arrive fully white — that’s the visual sign colonization is complete and the kit is ready to fruit.
Spawn. The starter culture the vendor inoculated into the substrate. You don’t see it separately because it has already grown through the entire block. The vendor’s job was to keep that spawn clean until shipping; yours is to not undo it. Don’t open the bag, don’t cut early, don’t poke at the block.
Fruiting body face. The exposed surface where mushrooms will form. On a typical kit, this is the side you’ll cut the X into. The block underneath the cut is where the mycelium has been storing up energy for fruiting — and the cut gives it a place to push out.
Filter patch. A small square of microporous material welded onto the bag wall. It breathes — oxygen in, CO₂ out — and keeps contamination out. Most home kits use a 0.5-micron patch. You do not need to interact with the filter. If a kit arrives with the patch wet, smeared, or covered by a sticker, contact the vendor; that’s a manufacturing defect.
If you understand those four parts, you can debug any kit symptom by asking which part failed. Most kit failures come down to: substrate too dry, cut too large, or the bag’s filter compromised.
Three kit formats you’ll see
Not all “grow kits” are the same. The listing language matters.
Ready-to-fruit (RTF). Fully colonized, shipped in a bag, you just cut and mist. This is the format this whole article is built around. Most oyster, lion’s mane, and shiitake blocks from reputable vendors arrive this way. If the listing says “ready to fruit” or “just cut and mist,” it’s RTF.
Spray-and-grow. A subset of RTF, but usually smaller (1–2 lb blocks) and shipped in a printed box with a built-in X already cut. The vendor did the cut, so the kit is even more beginner-proof. The trade-off is smaller yield per kit — typically 0.5 to 1 lb first flush, versus 1 to 2 lb from a 4 lb block.
DIY / “just add spores” blocks. A bag of uncolonized or partially colonized substrate that you inoculate yourself. Don’t start here. This is second-grow territory and adds contamination risk that the home kitchen can rarely handle cleanly. A Back to the Roots oyster kit and similar RTF blocks ship fully colonized; if a kit asks you to inject culture or grain spawn, you don’t have a kit — you have a project, and that project belongs in the grow bags path.
A short rule: if the listing says “ready to grow in 10 days” with a fully white block photo, it’s an RTF kit. If it says “just add spores” or “universal substrate” or doesn’t name a species, skip it.
Step-by-step: open → mist → pins → harvest → second flush
The actual hands-on time for a kit is about 10 minutes a day. Most of the work is waiting and looking.
- Rest a cold-shipped kit at room temp sealed. A block that just came out of a 40°F warehouse needs 2–4 hours to wake up. Cutting it cold can stall pinning. Don’t rush this step.
- Cut a small X (or follow printed pattern) on the face only. About 2 inches across is right. You’re slicing the plastic, not digging into the block. - Mist to dew 1–3× daily as needed — never a standing puddle. The face should look like a foggy window. If water is running down the side of the block, you’ve over-misted; tip the kit to drain and ease up tomorrow.
- Wait for pins; white fluff can still be healthy mycelium. Don’t mistake healthy mycelium for mold. White, dense, evenly-spread growth on the cut face is normal. Green, blue-green, pink, or black spots are not. When in doubt, see the contamination overview.
- Harvest by twisting clusters before caps flatten hard. Edges still curling slightly downward is the right window. A gentle twist at the base pulls the cluster free cleanly.
- Optional second flush: rest/rehydrate only as instructions allow. Many kits come with a printed soak time (often 12 hours cold water). Resume misting after the soak. Stop immediately if mold appears.
Species timing differs. Oyster is often the fastest — first pins in 7–10 days, harvest around day 14–18. Lion’s mane wants steadier humidity and often runs 14–21 days to first pins. Shiitake is the slowest, sometimes needing a cold shock, with first pins 3–6 weeks after the cut.
Species-specific kit picks
Different species reward different formats. Here’s how to read the products on this page:
Oyster (the forgiving default). The most forgiving edible in dry indoor air. A North Spore blue oyster kit is a 4 lb block that fruits in a wide temperature range and tolerates missed misting better than lion’s mane. If your kitchen runs cool in winter (under 68°F), blue oyster is the pick. If your kitchen runs warm (above 72°F), pink oyster varieties pin faster — a North Spore pink oyster kit is a 4 lb block that prefers warm kitchens. Lion’s mane (the showy one). Lion’s mane grows in shaggy white clusters and has a crab-like texture when cooked — butter and pan-fry is the classic. A North Spore lion’s mane kit, pack of 2 gives you two 4 lb blocks, which matters because lion’s mane humidity swings are sharper than oyster — if one block stalls, the other can carry the run. A budget Fungiworks lion’s mane kit is a 4 lb single block for the same kitchen workflow. Lion’s mane wants steadier humidity (60%+ ambient if possible) and a slightly cooler room. If your winter heating drops the room under 40% relative humidity, plan a humidity tent from day one. Lion’s mane first pins usually arrive in 14–21 days; harvest when the “teeth” or spines are still short and the cluster feels dense, not after they’ve elongated.
Shiitake (the patient umami reward). Shiitake is denser, slower, and has more bite than oyster or lion’s mane. A Root Mushroom Farm shiitake kit is a common starting point. Shiitake blocks often benefit from a brief cold shock (a few hours in the fridge) after first colonization, depending on the vendor’s instructions. First pins can take 3–6 weeks, longer than the other two species. The reward is a deeper umami flavor that dries and stores well. Don’t start with shiitake if you want a fast first harvest — start with oyster, and pick up a shiitake block on your second or third grow.
Other gourmet species. Chestnut, pioppino, and a few others ship as kits from specialty vendors. They follow the same RTF workflow, but humidity and temperature windows are tighter. A Myco Labs shiitake kit is a heavier 5.5 lb block option for growers who want more first-flush yield. If you buy one, use the species name as a search query and confirm the room range before you cut.
Minimum kitchen conditions (light / humidity / air)
You don’t need a controlled environment. You do need three things in the right range.
Light: day–night cue from room light. Mushrooms don’t photosynthesize, but they need to know day from night to trigger fruiting. A kitchen counter with a window or a counter that gets a few hours of indirect light works. Avoid harsh direct sun — that dries the cut face and overheats the block, often stalling pins.
Humidity: dewy cut face. The cut opening should look like a foggy mirror. Dry air aborts pins before they form. If your home drops below 40% relative humidity in winter, plan a humidity tent — a clear bag with vent holes, a glass cloche, or an upside-down translucent tub with a few air holes punched. The glass terrarium cloche covers most 1–2 lb blocks; for 4 lb blocks, a larger clear container works better.
Air: a little fresh air; stale sealed corners make weak stems. A kitchen counter or open shelf is fine. Don’t shove the kit in a closed cupboard — the CO₂ builds up, the mushrooms stretch looking for oxygen, and you get long, thin stems with tiny caps. You don’t need a fan or a “fruiting chamber” brand name — you need the bag vent to actually breathe. If your room is dry, the glass cloche is vented for fresh-air exchange while still holding humidity at the face.

Common kit failures and fixes
Most kit failures are the same three problems in different costumes. Walk through this list before you toss a kit.
No pins after 3 weeks. Three common causes: the cut face dried out (humidity too low), room temperature is outside the species range (too cold or too hot), or the block needs more time. For oyster, expect pins by day 14. For lion’s mane, day 21. For shiitake, 4–6 weeks. If the face is dry, mist more often or add a humidity tent — a continuous-mist spray bottle helps lock in steady moisture without flooding. If the room is too cold (under 60°F), move the kit to a warmer spot. If neither, give it another week. See pinning problems for the full decision tree.
Pins formed but aborted (stopped growing, shriveled). Almost always a humidity crash — a dry night, a heating cycle, a draft. The cluster will sometimes recover if you fix humidity fast, but often the run stalls and the kit needs to start a new wave. If aborts keep happening, add a humidity tent.
Side-fruits or fruits forming outside the cut. The block is fruiting wherever it can find fresh air — usually a hole in the bag or a seam. You have two options: cut a second X over the side fruit and let it grow, or rotate the bag so the cut face is up and mist the new cut. Side-fruits are not a problem; they’re a sign the block is healthy and just looking for an exit.
Stuck cluster that won’t release at harvest. A gentle twist at the base should pull the cluster free. If it resists, use a clean knife to cut at the base rather than tearing the block. Damaged mycelium stalls second flush — clean cuts are easier to re-fruit from.
Strong bad smell. Fresh mycelium smells clean and earthy, like fresh mushrooms. A sour, rotten, or chemical smell means bacterial contamination — usually from a soaking step that went too long or water that wasn’t clean. Isolate the kit and read the contamination overview before you open it indoors.
Contamination watch
Green patches → green mold. Lookalikes / white fuzz fear → contamination overview. Isolate first; do not scrape mold indoors.
If you see green, blue-green, pink, or black spots on the cut face, the kit is contaminated. Move it to a separate room, bag it inside a second bag, and discard outside. Don’t vent it indoors — mold spores spread through the air and can re-inoculate healthy kits on the same counter. Don’t try to “scrape off” the green and keep going; contamination is already in the substrate, not just on the surface.
White, dense, evenly-spread growth on the cut face is almost always healthy mycelium. This is the part beginners panic about most, and it’s the least likely to be a real problem.
Common mistakes
Pulling the whole block out of the bag. Drowning the cut. Ignoring dryness until pins abort. Starting bags before one kit success. Mistaking mycelium for mold and tossing a healthy kit.
A longer list, in order of how often home growers hit them:
- Removing the block from the bag. The bag is your humidity shell. Stripping it off is the single most common beginner mistake — the block dries out within hours and pins never form. If your room is bone-dry, a glass terrarium cloche over the cut face holds humidity without unwrapping the block.
- Over-misting. A standing puddle invites rot and confuses later judgment. Dew, not pool. A continuous-mist spray bottle puts out an even cloud; trigger sprayers dump drops that pool.
- Cutting too large an X. A 4-inch gash doesn’t give you “more mushrooms faster” — it gives you a larger dry surface and slower pinning. Two inches across is enough.
- Stacking kits in a closed cabinet. CO₂ builds up, stems stretch, caps stay small. Counter or open shelf.
- Skipping the rest after shipping. Cold-shocking a kit by cutting immediately is a known stall trigger.
- Trusting “mold” on a white, dense, evenly-spread mycelium face. Almost always healthy. Read the contamination overview before you bin the kit.
- Starting bags before one kit success. The bag path is real and rewarding, but it’s a second-grow move. One clean kit harvest teaches you the species and the timing far better than a 5 lb bag of substrate does.
If you’ve worked through this list and your kit still isn’t fruiting after 4–6 weeks (depending on species), the vendor’s colonization may have been incomplete. Contact the vendor — most reputable ones will replace a stalled block, especially if you can send a photo and the original shipping date.
